Multicultural Resource Center to update Safe Zone training, launch a 2.0 version

The Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) is revamping its Safe Zone Program, comprised of training related to LGBTQ programming.

Starting this semester, the Safe Zone training will be a four-hour offering, instead of an entire workday. The updated training program will focus on the basics of the LGBT community and the active engagement that allies offer as program participants. Safe Zone training is open to all members of the campus community and will be offered at least twice a semester.

Joshua Burford, the MRC’s assistant director for sexual and gender diversity, will conduct the sessions. He stated a new, second tier of training, Safe Zone 2.0, will be available for campus community members who complete the initial program.

According to Burford, Safe Zone 2.0 aims to enhance attendees’ access to information about LGBTQ issues and provide space for deeper conversations in order to keep allies engaged and informed.

This semester’s first updated Safe Zone training is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m., Monday, Feb. 18, in the Student Union, Room 263. A second training will be noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 5.

Burford said the MRC intends to start a Safe Zone committee for individuals interested in becoming Safe Zone trainers.

“By training more trainers, we’ll ensure that we can offer more trainings, as many as UNC Charlotte needs,” he said. The goal is to form the committee by the end of the spring semester.

Faculty and staff who participated in Safe Zone programming at other institutions are encouraged to contact Burford. “I plan on leading hour-long refresher courses for people who don’t have the time to go through another four-hour training. The more allies we have on campus, the better.”
