Staff Council names winners of Homecoming contests

The admissions staff of the Graduate School staked their claim to school spirit and won the Staff Council’s annual Homecoming Decorating Contest.

Staff members Quanny Beanum, TeQuilla Bennett, Phyllis Griffin,Patty Kohl, John Kohl (consultant), Missy Peterson and Marianne Williford turned a portion of the Cato Hall Admissions Office into a “gold mine” complete with Norm nuggets, pickaxe and shovel and other treasures in a cave-like setting.

“They did a fantastic job with the gold mine,” said Johnna Watson, associate dean of the Graduate School. “Their school spirit is contagious.”

The Student Union administration and support services unit took second place in the decorating contest, and the Undergraduate Admissions Office received honorable mention.

At the fifth annual Niner Chili Cook-off, Jeremi Watkins from the Financial Aid Office took first place. Bill Sparger was named fan favorite.

A scavenger hunt was a new event introduced this year, and the team of CRES Explorers won. Team members were Michael Lang (captain), Carrie Bromelle, Stephanie Burns, Ann Holt and Lucian Wilhelm.

Scavenger hunt teams had to take photos based upon clues provided by the Staff Council that related to the University or Homecoming, such as “It is important for us to stand erect with UNC Charlotte pride as a pillar of the community” (Belk Tower) or “Bonnie Cone was just as picturesque in 1907 as she was in 2003” (portrait of Miss Bonnie in the Cone University Center).

“We want to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Staff Council Homecoming Contests,” said Vidal Dickerson, president of the Staff Council. “These events are a great way for us to display our school pride and spirit. We were a little surprised that participation in some of the events dropped from last year, but we’ll be working hard to get ready for fall when Homecoming shifts to football. If anyone has any suggestions on ways to improve our contests, we welcome your feedback. Either contact your Staff Council representative or send your ideas to me.”
