HRL groups residence halls into villages as new construction continues

New construction related to housing and residence life has precipitated a recent decision to re-name the campus’ housing blocs. The new titles of North Village and East Village were added to the area designated South Village for consistency and to give residents of each bloc a sense of community and ownership.

“This is a really exciting time for the University: for new and old residents and for all students and active members of our campus community,” said Carolyn Thigpen, marketing and communications director for the technology services team in housing and residence life. “The names of our housing blocs have been updated: each one is a Village—East, South and North Village—and each one has its own unique feeling and identity.”

Beyond the renaming of the housing blocs, the Housing and Residence Life Office is waiting the completion of two more residential buildings and a parking deck, scheduled for completion this fall. A new dining hall is scheduled to open in spring 2014, and adding to these historic expansions, the UNC Charlotte’s twelfth residential building is scheduled to open in fall 2014.

All these projects stem from the University’s housing master plan, a $450 million dollar initiative that aims to support nearly 7,000 on campus student residents by 2017. Currently, approximately 5,240 students live on campus.
