CTL to hold 2013 Teaching with Technology Showcase

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

The Center for Teaching and Learning will present its 2013 Teaching with Technology Showcase from 1 to 3:30 pm., Friday, April 12, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 376.

Three faculty members, Dale Grote, Caryl Gordon and Justin Cary, will share their experiences using a variety of technologies to engage students in their courses. Students nominated 48 different professors this year – a record number – to be honored for their work.

Grote, a member of the Languages and Culture Studies Department, will present “Engaging Students in the Live Online Classroom.” In the presentation, he will demonstrate how he uses Centra, the University’s Web conferencing system, to hold live classes. He takes advantage of tools like whiteboard, breakout rooms and chat to keep students actively participating.

Gordon, from the American Studies program, will deliver “Promoting Interaction in Asynchronous Online Courses.” She will show how using Moodle’s Forum activity encourages all students to participate in the discussion, and she will illustrate how prompt feedback for both assignments and forum posts can help students integrate instructors’ constructive criticism into their future submissions.

Cary, who is with the First-Year Writing Program, will present “Social Media and Writing in the Higher Ed Classroom,” an overview of ways to use social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, plus some visual design tools such as Infographics, Wix.com, VoiceThread and more, to help students transform essays and writings into something special.
