Panel discussion/demonstration to explore art and technology

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

The College of Arts + Architecture will present the panel discussion/demonstration "Technology and Art: Gimmick or Transformation?” on Thursday, April 4, at UNC Charlotte Center City, as a kickoff event to the city-wide Ulysses Spring Arts Festival Brave New Worlds: Technology and Art.

In this free public, event, attendees will learn how technology impacts a performance and its experience. Also, these questions will be explored: how does technology change the way art is created, choreographed, composed and directed? How does it change the way performers approach it and the way the audience responds? When is technology a truly integrated and transformative part of the artistic experience and when is it a gimmick?

The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a live music and “sound painter” demonstration, featuring a trio led by percussionist Robert Beasley. At 7:30 p.m., the panelists – Sybil Huskey, professor of dance; Jay Morong, lecturer in theatre; Levine Scholar Evan Danchenka; and Michael Baumgarten,  Opera Carolina director of production – will speak about the emerging roles of technology in the performing arts, followed by a question-and-answer session.
