Children’s literature students to hold fundraiser

Monday, April 8, 2013

Students in the class “American Indians in Children’s Literature” will sponsor a book and bake sale on Monday and Tuesday, April 15-16, on the lawn in front of the Fretwell Building.

This event is a fundraiser for the Navajo Pine High School in New Mexico. The school was featured in a PBS documentary that followed the lives of three seniors who wanted to pursue higher education off their reservation, but they were afraid of being away from their families and culture. The school’s library is in need of college prep books and other media.

The sale also will benefit an annual drive for low-income American Indian families in Charlotte, sponsored by Lumbee storyteller Barbara Locklear, a teaching artist at the Blumenthal Center for the Arts.

Cash donations, books, school supplies, toys and clothing may be brought to the English Department or the sale. Email Susan Gardner at sgardner@uncc.edu for more information.

In the event of rain, the sale will be in the atrium of the Fretwell Building.
