April workshops for Academic Advisor Development Program

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

The Office of Academic Services continues its Academic Advisor Development Program, a free workshop series that will provide UNC Charlotte academic advisors with training on a variety of topics.

On Friday, April 19, the program will feature two workshops “Understanding International Students” at 9 a.m. and “Advising Students with Disabilities” at 10 a.m.

“Understanding International Students” will provide participants ways to communicate effectively with international students, and attendees will learn about resources at the University and in the community that will be helpful in understanding and working with international students. Marian Beane, director of the International Student Scholar Office, will deliver this presentation, in conjunction with a panel of international students.

“Advising Students with Disabilities” will provide advisors with an overview of the legal requirements surrounding academic access for students with disabilities. The session will highlight key components of disability culture/etiquette and provide tips on how to ensure access through case scenarios and discussion. Katie Montie, assistant director, Office of Disability Services, along with members of the Student Advisory Board, will lead this workshop.

Both workshops will be in Fretwell Building, Room 106. Prospective attendees should email RSVPs to academicservices@uncc.edu.
