UNC Charlotte Center City to host soccer challenge

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

The Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team and alumni, the Urban Ministry Center’s Street Soccer 945 squad and the La Raza soccer team will face off in a round-robin soccer tournament on Saturday, April 27, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

The tournament starts at noon and will include soccer clinics for all ages and abilities, autograph sessions with the 49ers men’s and women’s soccer teams and the “Art on a Soccer Ball” silent auction to benefit the Urban Ministry Community Works program and more. The Street 945 team will use its one-of-a-kind portable soccer flooring for the game in the garden outside UNC Charlotte Center City.

According to Donell Stines-Jones, community outreach coordinator at UNC Charlotte Center City, this event will be a “unique celebration that will unite our neighbors through the integration of art and athletics.”

Thirty soccer balls for the silent auction will be embellished with work by local artists. Fifteen of the balls will be designed by participants of the Urban Ministries Art Works 945 program; the other 15 will be by local artists. For more information on how to participate in the soccer ball embellishment, email Stines-Jones at dstinesj@uncc.edu.

In the event of rain, the soccer challenge will be held on Saturday, May 4.
