Spring 2013 engineering senior design expo set for May 2

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Seniors from the William States Lee College of Engineering will present their year-long senior projects at the college’s annual Senior Design Exposition on Thursday, May 2. The expo, which is free and open to the community, will be held in the center court of Halton Arena in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The expo is an opportunity to learn how engineering students and local companies collaborate to solve a variety of design problems. Student teams work on a broad spectrum of projects supported by sponsors ranging from individual entrepreneurs to multimillion dollar international companies.  According to Lee College officials, the expo has increased the visibility of the college’s students to the engineering community, making it a top recruiting method for employers.

More than 40 completed student projects will be displayed, along with designs for 20 mid-semester projects. Examples of completed projects include:

  • Computation fluid dynamic modeling of a 2012 Indy car chassis
  • Support modification for the “Miracle on the Hudson” plane
  • Wind-powered generator
  • NASA Lunabotics Competition robot
  • Table-top signaling device for restaurants
  • Campus shuttle tracking system

Providing students with an innovative, hands-on learning experience, the UNC Charlotte Industrial Senior Design Program is educating engineering students, supporting industry partners and benefiting the state. The program teaches students how to apply their years of math, science, and engineering knowledge to solve the unique problems presented by many progressive North Carolina companies. The Lee College of Engineering encourages multidisciplinary projects that involve engineering and technology solutions in the disciplines of mechanical, electrical, computer, systems, environmental and civil engineering.
