Fourteen retiring faculty honored for service

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

University leaders recently gathered for an annual reception to recognize 14 faculty members who are retiring.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, who hosted the event at the Harris Alumni Center, noted that the retiring faculty members were among those who helped to lay the foundation for UNC Charlotte’s rise to be the state’s urban research university during their combined 308 years of service. He added their departure coincided with two major events during the academic year – the opening of EPIC and the first-ever Green and White football game.

Each retiree received a Jefferson Cup engraved with his/her name and years of service presented by Provost Joan Lorden.

This year’s reception attendees were Robert Anderson, associate professor of mathematics and statistics; Sak Bhamornsiri, associate professor of accounting; Mary Lynn Calhoun, dean and professor of special education and child development; Nancy Cooke, associate professor of special education and child development; Nabil Elias, associate professor of accounting; John Gretes, professor of instructional systems technology; Lucinda Grey, lecturer in English; Gay Jordan, senior lecturer in social work; Valorie McAlpin, director, Center for Teaching and Learning; Benjamin Russo, professor of economics; Charlene Sheets, lecturer in mathematics education; Rosemarie Tong, director, Center for Professional and Applied Ethics and Distinguished Professor of Health Care Ethics; Ray Tsu, Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Robert Tyson, associate professor of physics and optical science.

Some faculty members may not have declared their intent to retire, so the above is not an exhaustive list for the current academic year.
