Yousra Javed, a doctoral candidate in the College of Computing and Informatics Department of Software and Information Systems, is the first UNC Charlotte student to receive the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) International Peace Scholarship. This prestigious award is for  up to $10,000, and it is renewable.

“I am grateful for this opportunity to be the recipient of PEO International Peace scholarship,” said Javed.  “This scholarship will provide me with the much needed financial assistance during my studies. I would like to thank my advisor Dr. Mohamed Shehab for his guidance, and the PEO scholarship committee for selecting me as a recipient.”

The PEO Peace Award recognizes international graduate students who are completing advanced degrees in “peace-related research.” Recipients apply their graduate training to solve issues such as access to clean water, adequate food, education for women and children, equality and physical security.

The Philanthropic Educational Organization is one of the pioneer societies for women. Founded Jan. 21, 1869, by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College, the organization has grown to almost 250,000 members in chapters in the United States and Canada.
