University communication initiatives receive Hermes Awards

Eight projects spearheaded by the Office of University Communications in the Division of University Advancement were recognized recently through the Hermes Creative Awards, given by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals.

The university’s quarterly magazine, UNC Charlotte, and a segment on James Tabor and the Jesus Discovery received top honors – a Platinum Hermes in the magazine and video/documentary categories, respectively. Earlier this year, the magazine won a national MarCom Award.

Gold Hermes went to the Inside UNC Charlotte website, a campus news and information resource that debuted this past fall, and Community Advance in the electronic newsletter category. Community Advance is a semi-monthly newletter targeted to UNC Charlotte advisory board members, trustees, cabinet members, dean, campus communicators and other external friends of the University; it provides samples of significant media coverage, community engagement activities and video productions. The webcasts from the 49er Democracy Experience that aired on Inside UNC Charlotte also received a gold award.

The Inside UNC Charlotte TV program won an honorable mention, along with a video about the Violins of Hope project and publicity for the N.C. Science Festival.

“The Hermes Awards are an international competition for communication professionals; entries come from corporate marketing/PR departments as well as ad agencies and PR firms. To be so honored is great validation for how we work collaboratively and successfully to tell the UNC Charlotte story and advance the mission and brand of the University,” said Stephen Ward, executive director of University communications.
