Student display focuses on creative space

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

The Student Union Art Gallery will showcase works by two students in the College of Arts + Architecture’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program starting Thursday, May 23.

An opening reception for “Topologies,” which features mixed media pieces by Lauren Phillips and Erin Davis, will be at 5 p.m., May 23.

According to Phillips, the works in “Topologies” focus on interior and exterior creative spaces. “Erin and I have been working together collaboratively for six months now, as well as independently.”

Phillips and Davis recently installed their first collaborative public installation in the foyer of Robinson Hall. With the pieces in “Topologies,” both artists are exploring ideas of space, both literal and metaphorical, and how space plays an integral part in the formation of new ideas and processes within an academic context.

“We use architectural elements found in the Department of Arts and Architecture,” Phillips said. “Our constructed spaces represent the paths, doorways and intersections that the mind travels through in order to reach its creative objectives.”

The Student Union exhibit will run through Friday, June 7.
