Nails, a senior philosophy and history major, is originally from Houston, Texas, but he grew up in the greater Charlotte area. A graduate of Hopewell High School, Nails competed in debate tournaments across the country; in 2010, he was ranked seventh in Congressional Debate in the United States.

In addition to being president of the Student Government Association, Nails is president of the UNC Charlotte Inter-fraternity Council. He is former vice president of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Upon graduation in spring 2014, Nails said he will either attend law school or work as a national consultant for the international office of his fraternity.
