Michael Carlin has been named vice chancellor for information technology and chief information officer at UNC Charlotte. He will join the University July 16 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
“Dr. Carlin impressed us with his professionalism, his enthusiasm and his demonstrated ability to foster collaboration among all members of a complex university environment,” said Joan Lorden, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We are confident he will rise to the challenge of providing technology solutions for our growing University community.”
Carlin, who has more than 15 years of experience as an information technology (IT) leader in higher education, served as associate vice president and deputy chief information officer at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). During his tenure, he was responsible for the vision, leadership, planning and operations of IT delivery. A wide range of services were under his direction, including administrative and academic computing, client services, network operations, research computing, infrastructure, disaster recovery, virtualization and security. He managed complex projects and initiatives and was responsible for the development and management of a $12.5 million dollar budget.
At UMBC, Carlin also held the positions of assistant vice president of information technology, director of infrastructure and support and manager of client services. He earned doctoral and master’s degrees in information systems from the institution, along with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences. His Ph.D. research focused on developing a set of cross‐cultural guidelines that would aid in the successful development of cross‐cultural e‐commerce sites between China and the United States.
