'ROCKIN' the Rotunda' summer concert series to kick off

Monday, June 3, 2013

Rock out this summer with the Campus Activities Board (CAB) as it sponsors “ROCKIN' the Rotunda,” a series of acoustic lunchtime concerts, which will take place in the Student Union Rotunda at noon.  Brandon Kirkley, a 49er favorite, will kick off the series on Monday, June 10.  Additional artists this summer include the Wilhelm Brothers and the Square Roots Duo.

“We want to create a fun social environment for our summer students here in the Student Union,” said Assistant Director of Student Activities James Contratto. “With the 'ROCKIN' the Rotunda series,' students can hang out, relax and eat lunch between classes while listening to some live acoustic music.”

Brandon Kirkley is the lead vocalist for Brandon Kirkley and the Firecrackers; he also plays guitar and keyboard for the group. The band’s style blends a pop sensibility with rhythm, melody and lyricism.

Kirkley is a UNC Charlotte alumnus and former homecoming king. Sam Webster, in an article for Creative Loafing, wrote “With his Niner-green guitar strap, Charlotte tattoo and University decal on his guitar, Kirkley is the epitome of school spirit.”

“ROCKIN' the Rotunda” continues CAB’s legacy of providing live music on campus for students, faculty and staff. The concert series follows on the heels of several live performances held in Cone University Center’s After Hours, but focuses on the Student Union as the primary on-campus hub for student activities during the summer.
