Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Gov. Pat McCrory has issued a congratulatory letter to the UNC Charlotte team in recognition of its participation in the U.S. Department of Energy 2013 Solar Decathlon.

"I am proud that UNC Charlotte represents our state in the 2013 Solar Decathlon," wrote the governor. His letter noted the experiential learning that the competition provides students and the broad range of partnerships that the UNC Charlotte team has cultivated in support of its house “UrbanEden.”

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon challenges 20 academic teams from around the world to design, build and operate fully solar-powered homes.  The UNC Charlotte team is made up of students and faculty from the School of Architecture, Lee College of Engineering and Belk College of Business.

The team is constructing “UrbanEden” on the UNC Charlotte campus. It will be completed in August, then dismantled and transported to Irvine, Calif., for the competition scheduled for Oct. 3-13.

June is Solar Energy Month in North Carolina. The state is ranked fifth in the nation for installed solar energy projects.
