UNC Charlotte, in partnership with Nissan North America and Levine Properties, now provides electric vehicle charging station at UNC Charlotte Center City.
The station, which features two electrical nozzles for owners of electric vehicles, is located at Brevard and Ninth streets. The chargers are available for use by the public; they offer up to two hours of free charging.
Nissan North America, manufacturer of the U.S.-built, zero emissions Nissan LEAF, donated the chargers to foster the expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure in downtown Charlotte. Levine Properties provided the site and wiring infrastructure.
A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony to introduce the charging station will be at noon, Thursday, July 18. An “EV Ride and Drive” using Nissan LEAF electric vehicles will follow the ribbon cutting.
In conjunction with the event, the University will honor Jay Wu, director of UNC Charlotte’s doctorate program in infrastructure and environmental systems (INES), for his work in the area of renewable/energy efficiency. Wu has been at the forefront of innovation for environmental sustainability, and UNC Charlotte is one of a handful of institutions that offer a doctorate program in this area.
In 2009, Chancellor Philip L. Dubois signed the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, which designates UNC Charlotte as one of 16 colleges or universities across North Carolina to sign the pledge to address global warming.
By signing the pledge, UNC Charlotte also joined more than 650 institutions of higher education across the nation that have declared they would address global warming by neutralizing their greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating research and educational efforts to equip society to re-stabilize the earth's climate.
