Sales tax holiday at Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte will observe North Carolina’s sales tax holiday, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 4.

During this weekend, established by the N.C. General Assembly, students can purchase textbooks and supplies in advance of the big rush, and faculty and staff can enjoy the savings, too, said officials at the campus bookstore, located on the first floor of the Student Union.

The sales tax holiday offers an opportunity for students and employees’ dependents enrolled at UNC Charlotte or other universities to shop for lower-priced used textbooks and save the state sales tax. (To determine if the texts needed are available at Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte and to insure the purchase of the correct course materials needed at other institutions, individuals will need the course material ISBN number.)

Operating hours for the sales tax holiday at Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte will be 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday; and noon to 7 p.m., Sunday.

Textbooks may be ordered online;  requests placed between midnight Aug. 2 and 11:59 p.m., Aug. 4, are guaranteed to be processed in time to save the 7.25 percent sales tax. Book orders will be boxed and waiting, ready for pick-up anytime after Aug. 7, or purchasers can choose to have them shipped.

Sales tax exempt merchandise includes: clothing, footwear and school supplies (even book bags) of $100 or less per item; school instructional materials (such as textbooks) $300 or less per item; sports and recreation equipment, $50 or less per item; computers of $3,500 or less per item; and computer supplies, $250 or less per item.
