Wednesday, July 31, 2013

The University’s annual Convocation, which traditionally marks the start of the academic year, will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois and Provost Joan Lorden will address faculty, staff and students at this yearly event. Also, Jim Kay, president of the Staff Council, and Brady Nails, president of the Student Government Association, will give remarks; Eddy Souffrant, president of the Faculty Council, will present the faculty agenda for the 2013-14 academic year.

Inside UNC Charlotte will broadcast Convocation via a live webcast.

During the event, new members of the faculty and professional staff are welcomed to campus, and faculty members granted permanent tenure and those beginning their 25th year of service are recognized. The recipient of the Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professor in Teaching is named, too.

Faculty members promoted to full professor will be acknowledged. They are Pilar Blitvich and Alan Rauch, English; Shen-en Chen, civil and environmental engineering; James Conrad and Ronald Sass, electrical and computer engineering; Gloria Elliott, mechanical engineering and engineering science; Cynthia Gibas, bioinformatics and genomics; James Grymes, music; Tina Heafner, middle, secondary and K-12 education; Eric Heberlig and Suzanne Leland, political science and political administration; Shawn Long, communication studies; and Maryann Mraz and John Piel, reading and elementary education.

Prior to Convocation, the UNC Charlotte chapter of the American Association of University Professors will host coffee for the campus community.
