University to test emergency alert system Aug. 9

Monday, August 5, 2013

UNC Charlotte will test its Alertus emergency alert software between 10 and 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 9.   The Alertus software is connected to the PIER Emergency Alert System.

In the event of a “red alert,” indicating an imminent threat to the campus community, the Alertus software will post a message containing emergency information on nearly 1,000 plasma televisions and smart podiums on campus as well as on the University’s website.

During Friday’s exercise, the Alertus message will indicate that a test of the UNC Charlotte Emergency Alert System is in progress.  Individuals who use smart podiums equipped with this software need only “click” on the acknowledge button at the bottom of the test message and the alert will disappear.

Such tests occur periodically throughout the year as part of the University’s emergency preparedness program. This is only a test and should require no special action. Direct questions to the Police and Public Safety Department at 704-687-8300.
