The late Julius Chambers, a Charlotte attorney and civil rights pioneer, argued a number of landmark cases related to de-segregation and voting rights before the U.S. Supreme Court, including Swann v. the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education in 1971.

Atkins Library’s “Julius L. Chambers Papers” provides a fairly comprehensive documentation of the pleading of this historic case through the court system. It includes court rulings and opinions; research materials; statistics; desegregation plans, transcripts of proceedings; and depositions, briefs and notes.
