Michael Cato, interim deputy chief information officer, has accepted the position of chief information officer (CIO) at Vassar College, effective Sept. 3.

Cato also served as UNC Charlotte’s interim vice chancellor for information technology and CIO following the departure of Jay Dominick in 2012.  He joined UNC Charlotte in 2006 as the director of health informatics in the College of Health and Human Services.

After completing a Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University in 2010, Cato was promoted to executive director of health informatics. In 2011, he joined ITS to lead client services.

Michael Carlin, the University’s vice chancellor for information technology and CIO, in an email to ITS staff, noted a number of Cato’s accomplishments at UNC Charlotte. He wrote, “Michael conceived and led the Future of Student Computing Initiative which has already resulted in a hardware support partnership with the NinerTech store, a new Service Desk presence in the Student Union and a hosted Virtual Desktop Infrastructure pilot for students.”

Before UNC Charlotte, Cato worked at UNC-Chapel Hill, where he developed and directed IT support for the Partnership for Minority Advancement in the Biomedical Sciences and the Institute for Science Learning.
