Senior Amanda McCoy is Miss Black USA 2013. She was crowned earlier this month in a ceremony at the University of the District of Columbia.

McCoy, who is completing a bachelor's degree in communication studies with double minors in women’s studies and journalism, is an active member of the Kappa Kappa chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated.

"My pride and passion centers around providing elementary/middle school-aged girls with skills necessary to become prominent members of our society," said McCoy. "Passion, energy, awareness, relationships, literacy and social skills make up the traits on which I focus."

She has visited various school systems to mentor young girls to aspire to be their very best and to use these skills to achieve success.  McCoy also is an advocate of the Heart Truth Campaign and promotes the importance of living a heart-healthy lifestyle.  She noted, "To know better is to do better - think smart and protect your hearts.”

MCoy, the daughter of Gregory McCoy and Connie McCoy Rogers, grew up in Cary. She graduated with honors from Southeast Raleigh High School.

In her spare time, McCoy said she enjoys fishing and the outdoors, listening to country music, hanging with her sorority sisters and spending time with family and friends.
