University faculty and staff members donated more than 3,000 items in support of the annual School Tools Campaign sponsored by Classroom Central, Communities in Schools and WSOC-TV.

“The support for this year’s School Tools campaign from faculty and staff was tremendous,” noted Jordan Harris, community affairs coordinator. “Our business is education, so it is important to support and invest in local education initiatives.  Through this campaign, we definitely exhibited the 'Giving Green' spirit, and our commitment to community engagement.”

Donations from campus community included pens, pencils, erasers, notebook paper, folders, notebooks, binders, crayons, colored pencils, markers, glue, reading books and book bags.

School Tools is a drive to collect and distribute school supplies to children in need. All supplies collected are distributed through Classroom Central, a free store for teachers and Communities in Schools site coordinators.

According to Tanisha Poole, business operations coordinator for Classroom Central, 54 percent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) students live in poverty. The School Tools campaign will provide students and teachers the necessary tools to succeed in and out of the classroom.

”Items we may take for granted, such as pens and paper, are very limited at several schools,” said Poole.
