The UNC Charlotte Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter plans to start a new tradition with football homecoming – construct a home for a deserving family on the University campus.
On Friday, Sept. 13, the entire campus community can help make this effort a reality by contributing to “Mining for 49,” a final-push fundraiser to reach $49,000. The donations will go toward the cost of the build.
“Mining for 49” will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., Sept. 13, at the plaza between the colleges of Education and Health and Human Services. Moe’s is donating food for the event, and there will a number of activities, giveaways and prizes. Student organizations will compete to raise the most money for “Mining for 49.”
As part of Family Weekend activities, members of the UNC Charlotte Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter will hold a special “shed building” event at 6 p.m., Sept. 13. Attendees can learn more about Habitat for Humanity and how to be involved with the campus build.
UNC Charlotte alumnus Joe Price (’83), a former Bank of America executive and a member of the Habitat for Humanity International Board of Directors and the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees, and his wife Chris (’82), along with a number of other committed alumni have issued a challenge grant to match $24,500 raised during “Mining for 49.”
Construction of the house is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 1, through Friday, Oct. 11, at the corner of University City Boulevard and John Kirk Drive; the home will be moved to a permanent location after it is 50 percent complete. The UNC Charlotte Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter will coordinate student and alumni volunteers who are interested in joining the actual construction effort.
“Sponsoring an on-campus build is a huge endeavor, but it is an opportunity for the entire campus to have a lasting impact in the community,” said Maggie Chahoud, special events coordinator for the UNC Charlotte Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter. “With more than 370 student organizations, we have a very active campus. Our chapter has reached out to many of the organizations, as well as area businesses, for their help to make ‘Mining for 49’ a success.”
