Nev Schulman to talk about online relationships

Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Nev Schulman, host and executive producer of “Catfish: The TV Show” will discuss the risks of starting online relationships at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

Schulman is best known for the 2010 documentary “Catfish” where he starred as himself; the film centered on a relationship he developed from an Internet meeting. He has since become the executive producer of “Catfish: The TV Show” on MTV.

At the Sept. 24 talk, sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB), Schulman will tell his story about falling in love with a girl online, only to find out he had been deceived. As a result, he embarked on a journey to help others who have formed online relationships meet for the first time.

Kacey Thompson, a graduate assistant with CAB, explained Schulman was chosen to speak because his show “had just launched on MTV and was gaining a lot of buzz around campus.”

She noted that students, faculty and staff who attend will “gain insight on how to be more careful when dating or forming friendships online.”

A reception will follow the presentation.
