“Wishful Thinking,” an exhibit of work by local artist and UNC Charlotte alumnus Jonathan Rice is on display in the Student Union Art Gallery.
According to Rice, his abstract paintings explore the relevance of the indescribable. “Creating art is a part of a spiritual journey as I seek to relate and connect the physical and nonphysical by drawing the viewer into a deeper understanding of his or herself in relation to the world.”
The images, colors, compositions and textures in Rice’s works are inspired by what he reads and listens to and what surrounds him.
Liz Walton, art gallery coordinator, said Rice’s pieces are “very open to interpretation. Some of Rice’s pieces are peaceful, while some have a very powerful reaction because of the technique used and his color choices.”
Rice, who received a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from UNC Charlotte, has been a co-editor, editor, author and host for various poetry publishers. He is a recipient of the Irene Blair Honeycutt Legacy Award for outstanding service in support of local and regional writers. Some of his art has been featured in online magazines, while other works have been exhibited in the N.C. Museum of Art and Vin Master in Charlotte’s SouthEnd.
“Wishful Thinking” will be exhibited through Sunday, Oct. 6.
