MRC programs to focus on LGBTQ history and disability

Throughout October, the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) will sponsor events to promote awareness of LGBTQ history and issues related to disability. These programs include:

Oct. 2—“Let’s Talk About it: Ability” will focus on conversations about disabilities at 12:30 p.m. in Student Union, Room 263. Attendees should come prepared to share their thoughts and to hear others’ perspectives.

Oct. 7—“Safe Zone 2.0: Student Life at UNC Charlotte” will be held at 2 p.m. in Student Union, Room 261. The program will engage Safe Zone Allies in conversations to deepen an understandings about LGBTQ issues on campus and around the country.

Oct. 11—“National Coming Out Day” will celebrate the first march on Washington, D.C., for LGBT Equality. People will be encouraged to tell their stories and to empower LGBTQ people and their allies to make changes in the community. The program starts at 10 a.m. in the Student Union Rotunda.

Oct. 15—The “Women of Color Conversation Series” creates opportunities for women students of color to build and strengthen connections with one another. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. in Student Union, Room 267.

Oct. 16— “Let’s Talk About It: Cross Cultural Relationships” will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Student Union, Room 200. This open discussion will tackle questions such as “Are international relationships any different than those of the same ethnicity?”

Oct. 17—Time Out Youth is partnering with MRC to host the LGBT Youth Leadership Conference, the first-ever summit on LGBTQ youth leadership. The conference will bring teachers, school counselors, middle/high school students and University students together to talk about issues related to queer youth experience. The event will be at 9 a.m. in the Student Union.

Oct. 23—The documentary “All of Us North Carolina” will be screened in the Student Union Movie Theater at 6 p.m. The film follows “All of Us” organizers on the fight against Amendment 1. Following the screening, the filmmakers will lead a discussion about the film and activism in North Carolina.

Oct. 26—A one-day Multicultural Leadership Conference will provide student leaders the opportunity to participate in workshops and listen to dynamic speakers to further explore the intersection of multiculturalism and leadership. The conference will be at 8 a.m. in the Student Union.

Oct. 28—“Friendly Peer Training” will help educate undergraduate students about the experiences of LGBTQ individuals on campus. This event will be at 5 p.m. in Student Union, Room 200.

The Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) seeks to further individual student learning and development, provide student services and foster a campus community that promotes student involvement.
