Annual benefit show to raise money for AIDS Walk Charlotte

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

PRIDE Spectrum, in partnership with the Campus Activities Board (CAB), will host the seventh annual “Scarlet Fever” fundraiser for AIDS Walk Charlotte at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 27, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free for all students with their University ID and $7 for all other attendees.

“Scarlet Fever” is a benefit show with student and professional performances that include drag, singing and dancing. Shangela, an African American drag queen, comedian and reality TV personality who appeared on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” is the featured performer.

Matthew Amabile, director of public relations and marketing for PRIDE Spectrum, stated he hopes the campus community will come out and support “an amazing show with a lot of interaction from the performers.

“Most importantly, I hope people will understand the importance of getting tested for HIV and staying safe, which is why we will have free rapid testing during the show,” said Amabile. “I also want the attendees to understand the importance of diversity, because we come from all walks of life, and we should not judge others because of what they do, especially on stage.”

“Scarlet Fever” started as an amateur drag show; it has evolved to incorporate dancing and modeling to the lineup. Last year, the show raised more than $2,000 for AIDS Walk Charlotte.
