Documentary and discussion to explore 'War on Drugs'

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

The documentary “The House I Live In,” which reveals the struggles and implications of America’s “War on Drugs,” will be shown at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, in the Student Union, Multipurpose Room. A discussion will follow.

“The House I Live In” is a 2012 documentary directed by Eugene Jarecki. It tells a number of stories of individuals affected by America’s “War on Drugs.” Portraits of a drug dealer, grieving mother, narcotics officer, senator, inmates and a federal judge are included in the documentary.

“The documentary will help raise awareness among members of the campus community about the political and economic corruption involved in our justice system,” said Claire Schuch, graduate assistant for the Center for Graduate Life, one of the event cosponsors. “America’s ‘War on Drugs’ is an important issue we should be aware of so we can help eliminate stereotypes and stigmas surrounding drug abuse, stop mass incarceration and break down the ‘school-to-prison’ pipeline.”

Rickey Hall, a community member involved with the Charlotte Action Research Project (CHARP); Gene Edwards, psychologist at UNC Charlotte’s Counseling Center; and John Stogner, assistant professor of criminal justice and criminology; are the panelists for the discussion after the film.

The Multicultural Resource Center and the Center for Wellness Promotion also are cosponsoring this free, public event with support from a Chancellor’s Diversity Mini-Grant, which provides small grants to students, faculty and staff to implement projects and activities that promote the value of diversity on campus.
