UNC Charlotte’s Collegiate Recovery Community will be the beneficiary of the inaugural Charlotte Heroes in Recovery 6K Run/Walk scheduled for 8 a.m., Saturday, June 21, at Reedy Creek Park.

According to its website, Heroes in Recovery is a movement ignited by Foundations Recovery Network and the widespread community to eliminate the social stigma that keeps individuals with addiction and mental health issues from seeking help.

“This race is the type of community event that draws attention to the important work that we do every day,” stated Carol Rose, marketing specialist for UNC Charlotte’s Collegiate Recovery Community. “We work hard to break down the cultural stereotypes and stigmas associated with addiction, and we want people to celebrate recovery and put the spotlight on healthy lifestyles.”

The University’s Collegiate Recovery Community offers weekly 12-step meetings, experiential activities, peer-mentorship as well as volunteer opportunities where sober students serve their community; build friendships; develop a solid support system; and build a lifetime of fun, happy memories.

At the June 21 6K run/walk, the top three males and females in the overall category will receive awards.. Additional prizes will go to the top three male and female finishers in their age divisions. Registered participants will each receive a short-sleeve technical T-shirt and finisher’s medal. Organizers state the event is family-friendly and will include food and entertainment for race participants and spectators.

Charlotte’s Heroes in Recovery event is scheduled to be the 13th in a series of 6K races held across the country to raise awareness and break the stigma associated with addiction treatment and recovery.

Early registration, which is through April 18, is $25 for all races. Regular registration is $30 increasing to $40 by the day of the race.

Headquartered in Nashville, Foundations Recovery Network is considered one of the premiere organizations for treating individuals with co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders.
