Jerry Mann, executive director of the Student Union and Cone University Center, was given the Honorary Membership Award from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) at the organization’s recent conference.

The award is given to individuals who have given exceptional service to ACUI. According to the association, Mann has served as a volunteer, and he played an important role in assessment services. In addition, he helped implement and define core competencies and skill sets, was an education council member and recently completed a term on the board of trustees.

“Jerry joined UNC Charlotte at a critical time for the University in the middle of construction of the Student Union,” said Jim Hoppa, associate vice chancellor for the Student Union, Activities and Recreation Department. “He brought a wealth of knowledge that steered us through the grand opening, staff expansion and laying the groundwork for our current operating procedures. It’s hard to imagine opening the Student Union without him.”

Since joining UNC Charlotte in 2008, Mann has managed construction teams, transition planning, facilities management, auxiliary partnerships, staff hiring and development and marketing and communication initiatives.

Mann also established the Student Union Advisory Board and implemented student employee training and development for more than 100 new student employee positions.

Prior to UNC Charlotte, Mann was director of the Student Union for the University of California at Los Angeles.

More than 1,400 ACUI delegates gathered in Orlando to honor colleagues; nearly 40 awards were presented during the ACUI annual conference and celebration of the its 100th anniversary.
