Graduate awarded State Department fellowship to Bethlehem University
Deborah Porter, a 2014 graduate of the master’s program in Teaching English as a Second Language and a former instructor in the English Language Training Institute in the Office of International Programs, has received a U.S. Department of State English Language Fellow award to Bethlehem University, West Bank, for 2014-15.
Porter will teach intensive English at Bethlehem University and join other English faculty to develop curriculum materials for the training of future English teachers.
“I am honored to accept this English Language fellowship and look forward to working with the faculty and students at Bethlehem University,” said Porter. “I have always had a keen interest in learning more about this region, and this is a great opportunity to do that.”
Through the English Language Fellow (EL Fellow) Program, highly qualified U.S. educators in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) participate in 10-month-long fellowships at academic institutions throughout the world.
The EL Fellow Program fosters mutual understanding, promotes English language learning and enhances English teaching capacity abroad. Through projects sponsored by U.S. embassies, EL Fellows share their professional expertise, hone their skills, gain international experience and learn about other cultures. Fellows also model and demonstrate up-to-date TEFL classroom practices that help foster thoughtful and responsible behavior in students and teachers of English.
