SAC Fitness Center to close for summer renovations
When the Barnhardt Student Activity Center (SAC) Fitness Center reopens this fall, students and visitors will enjoy new equipment and increased workout space. Starting Thursday, May 7, the fitness center will close for summer renovations. It is expected to reopen in August.
Additional features will include an expanded check-in and welcome area, improved lighting and increased accessibility. Private showers will be added to the men’s locker room, and both locker rooms will have private dressing areas.
“We’re excited to be able to upgrade this popular facility for our students and campus community,” said Jim Walczyk, director of recreational services. “New equipment and a brighter, more welcoming atmosphere will help challenge and motivate our patrons and elevate the workout experience.”
Renovations will impact the fitness center, which includes the weight room and personal training area. Alternate locker rooms will be provided while the general use locker rooms are renovated.
The rest of the facility will operate as normal for orientation, rec court activity, indoor track and other summer events. Recreational services will offer group fitness classes and open workouts on a limited summer schedule in the SAC fitness studio.
While registered UNC Charlotte students can continue to use the facility and services for free with their student ID, faculty and staff can purchase summer memberships for the rec courts and indoor track for $20. Those who already purchased a Green or Gold Fitness Membership will automatically receive a three-month extension at no additional charge to compensate for the summer service disruption to the SAC Fitness Center.
“We continue to see demand for more fitness and recreation spaces on campus,” Walczyk stated. “The improvements to the SAC Fitness Center combined with the renovations already under way in Belk Gym – which reopens later this fall – will help our efforts to meet the needs of a growing campus population.”
Belk Gym renovations include an additional 8,000 square feet of dedicated fitness space, air-conditioned gyms, day lockers, accessibility improvements and updated classrooms and lab equipment. It is scheduled to open later in fall 2015.
