N.C. senator to keynote 16th annual Cyber Security Symposium

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Sen. Richard Burr, chairman of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, will deliver a keynote address during the College of Computing and Informatics 16th annual Cyber Security Symposium on Wednesday, Oct. 14. A dedicated executive education program will be on Thursday, Oct. 15.

Burr (R-N.C.) is cosponsor of the Cyber Security Information Sharing Act of 2015, which was recently passed by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. The bill creates additional incentives to increase sharing of cyber security threat information while protecting individual privacy and civil liberties interests. The bill also offers liability protection to the private sector, thus enhancing its ability to combat cyber attackers.

“I'm very honored that Sen. Burr will be joining us this year,” said Bill Chu, a professor in the College of Computing and Informatics Department of Software and Information Systems. “This is just another example of how the symposium has grown over the years. We continue to draw attention to the urgency of dealing with cyber crimes. In addition to the senator, we are again assembling a list of distinguished industry experts from around the country to talk about this ongoing global threat. The symposium draws business and professional leaders from around the region and in 2014 sold out with over 600 attendees.”

This annual symposium is considered the premiere security conference in the region; it again will address the latest issues surrounding cyber crime and what is being done globally to combat daily reports of cyber attacks.

The Oct. 14 symposium will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Cone University Center. CEU and CPE credits will be offered.

In addition to Sen. Burr, speakers for this year include:

  • Ira Winkler, Secure Mentem
  • Mihir Maniar, Juniper Network
  • John Melton, WhiteHat Security
  • Todd Inskeep, Samsung
  • Maurice Uenuma, Center for Internet Security
  • Rodney Peterson, National Institute of Standards and Technology
  • Brian Garrett, SAS
  • Randall Laudermilk, Saint Corp.

Bank of America; Charlotte Research Institute; Qualys, Hall, Booth and Smith; Netskope; Duke Energy; BAE Systems; Oracle; Wells Fargo; TIAA-CREF; Amazon Web Services; Data Chambers; Lieberman Software; CheckMarx; and Optiv Security are cosponsors for the 16th annual Cyber Security Symposium.
