Belk Gym pool reopens
The Belk Gym pool, which measures half of an Olympic-sized pool at 25 meters long and 22 meters wide, has reopened for use. Pool improvements include new tile lane markers, lighting and ventilation, an improved pool deck and bleacher area and on-deck showers and restrooms. Additional improvements were made to the main drains and tile work around the pool deck during renovations.
“Swimming is a unique and great form of exercise. We are excited that the Belk Gym Pool is reopened so that the UNC Charlotte community has the opportunity to participate in special events, swimming laps and taking academic classes all in a welcoming aquatic environment,” said Matt Shilling, assistant director of facilities at recreational services.
Unlike running, swimming allows a person to have a high level of aerobic activity without the intense impact on the body. It also has more resistance than running because a swimmer must propel him or herself through water rather than air. There are many other benefits to swimming such as increased bone strength, maintaining flexibility and even preventing osteoporosis in women.
The Department of Kinesiology offers classes in swimming and lifeguarding and water safety instructor and SCUBA training. The Recreational Services Department utilizes the pool for open rec lap, intramural inner tube water polo and hydro-fit classes. The Venture program uses the pool for pre-trip trainings and introduction to kayaking courses, and members of the UNC Charlotte Swim Club use the facility.
