Applications being accepted for student social justice institute

Activate! is a semester-long leadership series focused on social justice, equity and activism offered by the Multicultural Resource Center. The program is accepting applicants for the spring 2018 semester. Undergraduate students must apply by 5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 1. This cohort will meet at 2:30 p.m., Thursdays, during the spring semester.

The Activate! Social Justice Institute was created to explore culture, privilege, oppression, marginalized experiences and how it relates to social justice. The program investigates the history of race and racism, queer history, rethinking abilities, faith and non-faith, as well as classism. UNC Charlotte students are encouraged to examine and work toward understanding social issues both on campus and across the country.

“Many students at the beginning of Activate! do not necessarily describe themselves as activists, and that is absolutely okay,” said Rachael Forester, an assistant director of the Multicultural Resource Center. “This institute is perfect for students who have an understanding that there is injustice in this world and would like to learn more about the role they can play in dismantling the system of oppression.”

Activate! functions like a weekly class but is not credit-bearing. By supporting one another, students within the program will have a chance to understand their roles within society and the changes they can create through active learning.
