Ted Elling, associate vice chancellor for research and systems development in the Division of Student Affairs, will retire on April 1 after 27 years of service.
A retirement reception in his honor will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, March 29, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons.
Elling coordinates research, assessment and information technology efforts for Student Affairs in addition to serving as the principal investigator of various division and University research initiatives. He earned a doctorate in higher and adult education from Columbia University, a Master of Science in Counseling and Student Development from Radford University and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from SUNY Potsdam. His research interests include data integration to enable assessment and program evaluation as well as issues related to new student retention and graduation.
In addition to research at UNC Charlotte, Elling has conducted a number of national studies on the expertise, professional development needs, involvement and characteristics of student affairs assessment professionals. He is a founding member and former co-chair of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Assessment, Evaluation and Research Knowledge Community. He also is a founding member and former national chair of the Student Affairs Assessment Leaders organization.
Elling’s involvement in those two organizations has helped support the 132 student affairs assessment offices across the country to enable them to provide high quality assessment services to their institutions.
