The 2018 Charlotte Dance Marathon raised $101,761.08 for the Levine Children’s Hospital. Organizers announced the record-setting amount at the conclusion of its 12-hour dance marathon on Sunday, April 8.

Megan Woody, development director for Charlotte Dance Marathon and a Levine Scholar, told the Niner Times that this year’s success was due to individual efforts. “There was a big push on personal fundraising this year, and we really tried to involve all of our dancers.”

A student-led organization, Charlotte Dance Marathon was founded by the first class of Levine Scholars as “Dance Mine” in 2013.

Marathon organizers adopted the motto “For the Kids” for this year’s event and engaged student volunteers to raise funds throughout the 2017-18 academic year.

“This year has been so amazing for Dance Marathon in so many ways, including lots of new faces and events. It gives me the opportunity to directly impact kids’ lives in a fun and lighthearted way,” said Tyler Rapp, engagement director for Charlotte Dance Marathon.

As part of the 12-hour marathon, which began at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 7, in Halton Arena, a number of miracle families attended the festivities, which included a wheelchair basketball game between Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets and a few Dance Marathon members.

UNC Charlotte, through Charlotte Dance Marathon, is among the approximately 300 universities nationally that hold fundraisers to support their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.
