Reminder about Voluntary Shared Leave benefits
The University’s Voluntary Shared Leave Program can help employees who may not have sufficient leave to cover a prolonged absence as a result of their own medical condition or to care for an immediate family member. The summary information below provides more information about requesting and/or donating voluntary shared leave.
Requesting Voluntary Shared Leave
Recipient Eligibility:
- Employed in a full-time or part-time (20-plus hours per week) permanent, probationary or trainee position that is leave-eligible
- Have a prolonged medical condition or have an immediate family member with a prolonged medical condition requiring care
- Apply or be nominated
- Produce supporting medical evidence
- Exhaust all leave (vacation, sick leave, bonus leave and compensatory time)
- Receive Benefits Office approval
NOTE: An employee on maternity leave may be eligible to receive voluntary shared leave to cover the period of disability related to the pregnancy and/or birth as documented by a physician. Voluntary shared leave cannot be used for parental care of a newborn child absent a documented prolonged health condition.
To apply for voluntary shared leave: Complete the Extended Leave of Absence Resource Guide (12 month FMLA) or Voluntary Shared Leave Application
Donating Voluntary Shared Leave
Donation requests for eligible recipients are posted under For Faculty/Staff on Inside UNC Charlotte for a two-week period.
Donor Eligibility:
- Active employee, in leave-earning position with sufficient leave balances
- Donations must be made to a specific employee
- Family and non-family members may donate eligible sick, vacation, and bonus leave
NOTE: Donated sick leave shall not be used for retirement purposes.

Confidentiality/Voluntary
Leave donations shall be kept confidential (only the employees may reveal their donation/receipt of leave). Leave donation is completely voluntary; intimidation or coercion regarding employee rights for donating, receiving or using voluntary shared leave are prohibited.
