UNC Charlotte faculty members’ interest in researching and practicing pedagogy focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning continues to increase.
Since 2014, the Center for Teaching and Learning’s Active Learning Academy, has engaged more than 250 instructors and instructional staff members on the topic of active learning, and in June 2020 published “Faculty Experiences in Active Learning,” an open educational resource (OER) book that can be purchased from UNC Press. Proceeds support a fund for active learning classroom updates at UNC Charlotte.
Twenty-four faculty and administrators in the Active Learning Academy contributed to “Faculty Experiences in Active Learning.” Chapters cover a range of topics on active learning, including implementing logistics and strategies for getting started with active learning methods, using flipped classroom models, evaluating student engagement, addressing accessibility in active learning classrooms, and experimenting with adaptive academic technologies.
For 2020-21, the Active Learning Academy will be held fully online. Participants will be offered monthly webinars exploring special topics in practicing active learning in online environments, monthly active teaching and learning forums, special guest speaker events and other resources to help them continue to practice active learning amid the changes to academic course delivery. Participants also will learn about how to apply for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grants for use in research or conference presentations.
