Michael Lang ’12 is the associate director of conferences, reservations and event services (CRES) and a former student employee, graduating from the Belk College of Business. Learn about Lang’s role, his favorite areas of campus and opportunities for students.

Can you describe your role at UNC Charlotte?

Conferences, reservations and event services is responsible for scheduling and coordinating the use of space on campus. As associate director of CRES, I oversee the operations of the conference program that includes year-round camp and conference activity on campus ranging from academic enrichment programs to sporting events. We work closely with our campus partners to coordinate their services for these conferences. Our office makes just under 40,000 space bookings on campus in a normal year.

How has it changed with COVID-19?

The pandemic has drastically changed how we work and has taught us to be even more flexible and switch gears quickly. We are gearing up for our busiest summer conference season in more than two years and are excited to welcome back many camps to campus again.

What do you enjoy about your work on campus?

I enjoy being able to work with our students the most. As a former student employee, I have been able to view the University from both lenses: first as a student and now as a staff member. I started out as a summer conference assistant 10 years ago, and now I am managing this group of student workers. It has been a unique and rewarding experience for me to see everything come full circle and be able to develop future professionals and leaders. If you’re a current student or know of one that is organized and interested in planning events, I highly recommend applying to be a summer conference assistant in Hire-A-Niner. We are accepting applications through March 13.

What is something about your work that every 49er should know?

Space on campus is at a premium, and we try our best to maximize its use. This requires me to be creative and think outside the box. Event planning is very different on a college campus, and each day brings something new. Our office strives to provide the highest level of customer service as we want every event to be safe and successful.

What is your favorite part about being at UNC Charlotte?

My favorite part about being at UNC Charlotte is showcasing our campus facilities to the University community and guests. I enjoy conducting site tours and educating visitors on what the University has to offer because so many are in awe after stepping foot on our campus for the first time. There is always something new and exciting to highlight!

What are your favorite things to do on campus?

There are so many things to do on campus that I can’t just pick one favorite! You can catch me at all of the football and basketball games on the weekends with my family or walking across campus in the middle of a weekday going to a meeting or checking on an event.

What advice do you have for fellow 49ers?

Network with your fellow 49ers! You never know when you may need something or who may know someone. Although we are a large University, we still have a small community feel. In my role, I am able to collaborate with numerous departments on events and projects. Getting to know other 49ers has helped me succeed at my job and in life. Not only that, but I have also made some long-lasting friendships and truly feel like I am part of a 49er family.
