This year’s TEDxUNCCharlotte, featuring 11 total speakers, is a live event from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 18, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. Of the 11 speakers, three are UNC Charlotte staff or faculty members, and six are University students.

Tickets for this year’s event are on sale. Student tickets are $10; general tickets are $20. The first 150 people to purchase a ticket will receive a custom TEDx notebook at the event.

“TEDxUNCCharlotte is an opportunity to experience the talents and ideas of the University and Charlotte community,” said Michael Maksymowski, assistant director of leadership and community engagement. “This event provides an accessible outlet to hear interesting ideas across mediums while connecting with other members of the community.”

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. The “x” in TEDx signifies that it is an independently organized TED event being held in the spirt of ideas worth spreading.

The 2023 installment of TEDxUNCCharlotte is the fourth offering featuring speakers discussing a variety of topics:

  • Brad Yeckley, director of Niner Finances, “Financial Security is Emotional Security”
  • Brenna Murray, undergraduate student, “Athletes and Mental Health”
  • Hasitha Kommera, undergraduate student, “The Future is Humans Working Alongside Robots”
  • Janeva Tyree, owner and creator of Janeva Tyree LLC, “The Important of Art in Community Spaces”
  • Mahrukh Maqsood, graduate student, “How Colleges and Universities can be More Inclusive for Muslim Students”
  • Makiah VanBracey, undergraduate student, “Letting Go of Your Dreams”
  • Manav Majumdar, undergraduate student, “Photography as a Valuable Medium”
  • Montina Myers-Galloway, therapist at Myers-Galloway Counseling, “The Parentification of Black Women”
  • Othelia Lee, professor, “Human-Robot Interactions in Home Care for Older Adults”
  • Ryan Shah, undergraduate student, “Learning Inside and Outside of the Classroom”
  • Taryne Mingo, assistant professor, “The Inequitable Weight of Surviving COVID-19”

“I am really excited to see all of these ideas on stage,” Maksymowski said. “This year has the highest percentage of student speakers featured at the event. The speakers’ passions, experiences and expertise are presenting interesting ideas from a range of themes. Attendees should be able to find a new idea or perspective presented from the talented speakers.”
