Kirsti Kauppi, ambassador of Finland to the United States, will present “Transatlantic Relations: A Finnish Perspective” at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the Cone University Center, Room 208, as part of the Fall 2018 International Speaker Series.

With a total student population bumping against 30,000 to start the 2018-19 academic year, UNC Charlotte continues its longstanding upward growth. With a record-breaking total enrollment of 29,710, UNC Charlotte trails only North Carolina State University and UNC Chapel Hill in terms of student body size among the UNC System’s 17 campuses.

UNC Charlotte will move to Condition 1 (reduced operations) effective from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, for employees. Offices are expected to be open, with at least minimal operations, and employees are expected to report to work as assigned if they are able

As a result of expected effects of Tropical Storm Florence, UNC Charlotte will remain in Condition 2 (suspended operations) from 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16, through 11:59 p.m., Monday, Sept. 17.

UNC Charlotte will remain in Condition 2 (suspended operations) through 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16, with all weekend classes canceled.

Due to expected emergency conditions across the state in advance of Hurricane Florence, UNC Charlotte officials have decided the University will operate in Condition 1 (reduced operations) effective 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 12; evening classes are canceled.

UNC Charlotte’s annual Study Abroad Fair is an opportunity for students to learn more about where they can study or intern abroad.

This year’s fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the food court of the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.

Students will be able to speak with staff members from the Office of Education Abroad to learn how to start the study abroad process as well as connect with UNC Charlotte study abroad alumni.

UNC Charlotte is monitoring Hurricane Florence closely. At this time, the area is not expecting significant effects from the storm beyond moderate to heavy rain and some gusty winds. However, it is important to note that even a slight change in the storm’s path could lead to greater effects in Charlotte.

Lee College of Engineering’s Tony Schmitz invests significant time in his students with a goal to “train decision makers.” For his efforts, he was named the 2018 recipient of the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence, one of UNC Charlotte’s most prestigious accolades.

Physician Mario Barbé is back at Clínica Alemana, one of the premier hospitals in Santiago, Chile, where he is chief of a data analytics and artificial intelligence unit.

One of the first projects for this UNC Charlotte graduate alumnus is to use cluster analysis and machine learning to explore the hospital’s diabetic population.
