Business professors to appear on May 21 ‘Live Wire’
Ted Amato, director of the Belk Scholars and Business Honors Programs in the Belk College of Business, and Craig Depken II, program dDirector for the Master of Science in Economics program, will be guests on the May 21 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. They will discuss the college’s Belk Scholars Program in Business Analytics.
“The Live Wire” can be viewed on desktop computers or mobile devices starting at 2 p.m.
University to cosponsor Google Developers Group conference
UNC Charlotte is one of the cosponsors for a conference that will draw hundreds of computer coders, developers and students on Thursday, May 28, at the Harvey Gantt Center for African-American Arts+Culture.
Billed as part watch party and part development workshop, the May 28 event coincides with the annual Google I/O conference in San Francisco. The Queen City event will be from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Levine Hall to house scholars beginning in 2016
UNC Charlotte broke ground May 12 on a new residence hall dedicated to housing students of the Levine Scholars Program and the Honors College. The new facility will be known as Levine Hall, in honor of Sandra and Leon Levine. Through their foundation, the Levines have committed more than $18 million to the Levine Scholars Program, which began in 2009. Levine Hall is scheduled to open in summer 2016.
Atkins Library receives Mellon grant for eBook research
Through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the UNC Charlotte J. Murrey Atkins Library will investigate how best to license and acquire electronic resources for academic libraries. The $271,000 award is a two-year research and planning grant to produce recommendations for the licensing and acquisition of electronic resources, particularly eBooks.
Summer workshops scheduled for Starfish training
Starfish will replace Niner Advisor on 49er Express starting Sunday, June 28. This new system will allow instructors to notify their students systematically regarding their academic performance in their courses. Starfish is already integrated with Banner and Moodle for users.
Mellichamp to guest on May 14 ‘Live Wire’
Larry Mellichamp, director emeritus of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will be the guest on the May 14 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. He will discuss the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens and the opening of a new display garden, the Mellichamp Native Terrace. A ribbon-cutting and self-guided tours of the new garden will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 31.

Faculty workshop focused on disruptive conduct
Declining civility among higher education faculty was cited as a concern this year by an Inside Higher Education survey of college/university chief academic officers. According to the results, 27 percent of provosts were “very concerned” and 44 percent were “somewhat concerned.”
Inaugural recipients of Graduate School veteran assistantships named
Three military veterans will begin earning their master’s degrees at UNC Charlotte aided by substantial awards provided by the University’s Graduate School. The funding, called assistantships, will cover tuition and health insurance, plus a $12,000 annual stipend. Total value of each assistantship is roughly $36,000. The awards require the students to aid professors in their departments with research and teaching.

Mirsad Hadzikadic, director of the Data Science and Business Analytics Professional Science Master’s (PSM) degree program and faculty director of the Health Informatics (PSM) degree program, was a featured guest on the “Live Wire” earlier this year. He discussed how UNC Charlotte has developed cutting-edge curriculum to meet the 21st century talent needs of business and industry.

Top 40 Academy publishes faculty guide to support student success
Teaching large-enrollment courses can be a challenge for faculty members. Through the efforts of the Top 40 Academy, coordinated by the Center for Teaching and Learning, instructors have a new resource to promote students’ achievement.
