Series to explore the Civil War ‘Beyond the Myths’

A series of programs scheduled in February and March will look at the impact of the Civil War on North Carolina, and how the state’s role in the Confederacy plays out today in the ongoing tensions surrounding the monuments of that war.

Penn State professor to talk mourning spaces for the living

Mariana Ortega, an associate professor at Penn State University, will present “Memento Vivere: Shadow Ground, Aesthetic Memory and the Border” at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Atkins Library Halton Reading Room.

Happy Birthday Charlotte: University participating in ‘CLT 250’

J. Murrey Atkins Library will host a campus-wide celebration of Charlotte’s 250th anniversary on Monday, Dec. 3, the official date of the founding of the Queen City.

Veteran Atkins Library employee Robin Drake has died

Robin Drake, 60, died Nov. 6 at the Brian Center of Concord. A longtime member of the Atkins Library staff, Drake joined UNC Charlotte in 1979.

During her career, Drake worked in several units, including Cataloging, Acquisitions, Circulation, Technical Services and most recently Special Collections and University Archives.

Authors to discuss ‘Miss Bonnie’s Nurses’

Ann Mabe Newman and Dona Haney co-authored “Miss Bonnie’s Nurses: The First Fifty Years of Nursing at UNC Charlotte,” and they will discuss the work at 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Atkins Library, Halton Reading Room.

Area 49 to spark innovation/collaboration through advanced technology

 Area 49, a state-of-the-art learning and technology space designed to encourage cross-disciplinary exploration and collaboration, is open at UNC Charlotte’s J. Murrey Atkins Library. A ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 25, held at Area 49 on the library’s second floor, marked its introduction to campus.

Ambassador to discuss ‘Middle East Meltdown’

Ambassador Ryan Crocker will present “Middle East Meltdown: Causes and Consequences” at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the Atkins Library, Halton Reading Room, as part of the fall 2018 International Speaker Series.

Salas receives Atkins Library Faculty Engagement Award

Consuelo Salas is the 2018 recipient of the J. Murrey Atkins Library Faculty Engagement Award. An assistant professor with the University Writing Program and the Department of English, Salas will be honored during a library social and award ceremony, scheduled for 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Halton Reading Room.

The Atkins Library Faculty Engagement Award is presented to a UNC Charlotte faculty member who has engaged in innovative or exceptional work with library collections, programs and services. It comes with a $2,500 allocation for professional development.  

Library hosting exhibit, events on health care reform

“For All the People: A Century of Citizen Action in Health Care Reform” is on display on the first floor of the J. Murrey Atkins Library. This six-banner traveling exhibition was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health.

Federal officials to talk patents, trademarks

Atkins Library will host a seminar led by officials with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday, Aug. 1. At this event, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Halton Reading Room, speakers will provide an overview of intellectual property terms, and they will discuss how to conduct U.S. patent and trademark database searches and identify scams to watch for when promoting inventions.

A panel of local professionals will answer questions about legal, educational and business resources for inventors and entrepreneurs.
