Education professor emerita Theresa Perez has died
Theresa Perez, professor emerita, Department of Middle, Secondary and K-12 Education, died Jan. 13, 2019, in California.
Perez dedicated 14 years to UNC Charlotte, where she established the Teaching English as a Second Language program and served as a tireless advocate for educational equity.

IST program achieves second Quality Matters certification
The Instructional Systems Technology Program recently received its second Quality Matters (QM) program certification. This new recognition is for Online Learner Success. UNC Charlotte is the second institution to receive this individual certification, since the introduction of QM program certification in 2015.

Levine Jewish Community Center recognizes Cato College of Education
The UNC Charlotte Cato College of Education has received the 2018 Yachad Award from the Levine Jewish Community Center for the college’s work in support of the city of Charlotte. The award recognizes UNC Charlotte and the center’s collaborative work on a summer camp designed to help struggling students improve their reading while enjoying the fun and games of traditional summer camps.

Education professor helps guide national dual language standards
Cato College of Education professor Joan Lachance and a colleague have authored a new publication that will provide educator preparation programs with a set of standards to guide dual language teacher preparation across the county.
The National Dual Language Education Teacher Preparation Standards (NDLETPS) aim to support federal, state and local stakeholders who prepare dual language educators for the linguistic, cultural and ideological depth of working in K-12 and potentially K-16 dual language programs.

New grant to support military veterans’ graduate studies
UNC Charlotte has received a $750,000 grant to help attract and support military veterans in earning graduate degrees in STEM disciplines, with particular emphasis on advanced degrees in mechanical engineering.

Education honor society chapter wins pair of awards at national convocation
UNC Charlotte’s chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education, has continued an award-winning streak with a pair of honors at the 52nd Kappa Delta Pi Convocation. KDP received the Program Award for Professional Development and Literacy Alive Bronze Award, recognizing the impactful programming and service provided by the chapter during the last two years.
