First Ward Park to serve as community centerpiece

First Ward Park is being designed as a community centerpiece – it will be bordered by UNC Charlotte Center City and ImaginOn. At a Sept. 18 ceremony to break ground officially for the park, Chancellor Philip L. Dubois said the park always has been part of Daniel Levine and the University’s vision for First Ward.

Annual Staff Council Fall Festival set for Oct. 7

Food, contests, fun and games are on tap for the annual Staff Council Fall Festival, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
The festival is a free event; however, staff members should bring their UNC Charlotte ID for the BBQ luncheon.
Employees can compete to win prizes in the Fall Festival Bake-off and Photography contests; winners will be announced at noon. Rules and entry forms are on the Staff Council website; the deadline to register is Thursday, Oct. 2.

Groundbreaking for First Ward Park scheduled

UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois and Executive Director of UNC Charlotte Center City Jerry Coughter, along with city, county and local business leaders, will participate in groundbreaking ceremonies for the planned First Ward Park at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 18, at the corner of Brevard and 9th streets.
The event is open to the University community and will include music and refreshments.

2014 Chancellor’s Reception scheduled for Oct. 14

The Chancellor’s Reception, part of the University’s staff recognition program, is held to express appreciation to staff and faculty members, and it is an opportunity to socialize and network with colleagues.
This annual event, which is hosted by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Student Union Multipurpose Room. Light hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served.

Chancellor speaks about economic development in Union County

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois was the keynote speaker at the 16th annual Hook and Slice Industry Appreciation Banquet presented by Monroe-Union County Economic Development on Thursday, Sept. 4.  In his remarks to an audience of about 100 industry leaders in Union County, Dubois emphasized UNC Charlotte’s shared goals of economic prosperity and other connections with Union County. He met a number of local elected officials including Monroe Mayor Bobby Kilgore, industry leaders and many alumni who are making a difference in Union County. 

Sign up for Miles to Wellness, walking challenge begins Sept. 22

The 2014 Miles to Wellness Pedometer Challenge will begin on Monday, Sept. 22. Sponsored by the Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Health and Wellness (ACCEHW), this event is open to all faculty and staff.
Individuals or teams can participate in this eight-week challenge; signups are through Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Chancellor looks back, forward during University Convocation

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois focused on the University’s past and future in his Convocation remarks, noting in a highly competitive world of higher education, interest in UNC Charlotte continues to climb.
“Notwithstanding some challenges … this institution finds itself in a very good place,” he said. “Completed applications for freshman admission this fall reached 15,600, an 80 percent increase since 2005. Our goal with all of these students, of course, is to send degree recipients out into the world of work as productive and engaged members of the community.”

Staff Council recognizes former webmaster Elizabeth Mace

Staff Council officers Jim Kay and Penny Stevens recently honored Elizabeth Mace for her years of volunteer service as the council’s webmaster.
Mace, a post-award specialist in the College of Health and Human Services, was nominated for the role in 2009 when budgetary restrictions eliminated funding for the work-study student who maintained the council website.

Technological advances prompted change in student education records policy

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act was passed 40 years ago, and recent changes to the University’s student education records policy address advances in technology since FERPA became law in August 1974.
“Our definition of directory information was similar to that of other colleges and universities across the country,” said Jesh Humphrey, deputy general counsel with the Office of Legal Affairs. “However, a couple of months ago, the chancellor asked the Office of Legal Affairs and the Registrar’s Office to review our policy to better protect our students’ privacy.”
