Dance professor wins Atkins Library Faculty Engagement Award

Prominent guests, diverse programming featured in Faculty Dance Concert

The Department of Dance will present its annual Faculty Dance Concert Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7, in the Anne R. Belk Theater in Robinson Hall.

View ‘Waffle House Vistas’

Charlotte photographer Micah Cash’s “Waffle House Vistas” exhibit is on display in the Storrs Gallery through Friday, Sept. 20. An artist’s reception is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 29.“Waffle House Vistas” focuses on the built environment as seen through the windows of Waffle House restaurants from across the southeastern United States. The collected images contemplate the surrounding architecture of habitat and commerce through the lens of a southern cultural icon.

Bryant’s work to be displayed at App State

The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University will host an exhibition of sculptures by lecturer Keith Bryant.  “Metaphorical Reality,” which opens Friday, Sept. 6, presents 12 works that address ideas of loneliness, isolation, architecture and landscape.

Faculty & Friends Concert Series starts Aug. 26

The Department of Music will present Assistant Professor of Trumpet Eric Millard and pianist Erin Palmer in the first Faculty & Friends Concert of the 2019-20 season. The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 26, in the Rowe Recital Hall.The lively program, titled “Carnaval,” will feature a wide range of music, from the Concerto in E-flat by the 19th century opera composer Vincenzo Bellini, to the Irish ballad, “’Tis the Last Rose of Summer.”

Architecture team wins honorable mention in international competition

A team of architecture students, led by School of Architecture faculty members Chris Jarrett and Peter Wong, has received an Honorable Mention in the 2019 Timber in the City: Urban Habitats Competition presented by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA).

School of Architecture to co-present ‘Cities of Tomorrow’

The School of Architecture and Discovery Place Science will co-present “Cities of Tomorrow,” a panel discussion featuring UNC Charlotte architecture faculty and alumni, on Friday, Aug. 23, at Discovery Place. The discussion is inspired by the “Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO Bricks” exhibition, which is on display at the science museum.

Jazz studies director featured on album

Will Campbell, professor of saxophone and director of the UNC Charlotte jazz studies program, is a featured performer on the album, “New Songs for the 20th Century.”The album, released in June, is by musician, songwriter and producer Chris Stamey, best known as a founder of the rock group, the dB’s. 

Dance alumna receives research fellowship

Dance alumna Lillian Willis ’17 was awarded a Short-Term Research Fellowship from the New York Public Library for the project, “Seeking Accessibility: American Dance Practices for the Blind and Visually Impaired.”

Music Department to hold annual piano sale

During the past academic year, the University’s Department of Music has had access to first-class standard and digital pianos through an association with the Rockley Family Foundation.

To perpetuate this program, these instruments, along with those provided other institutions, will be sold at the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts.

Individuals can make an appointment to attend a “pre-sale” Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 1-3, by calling 704-661-2792.

The final sale will be 2 to 5 p.m., Aug. 3, and no appointment is required to attend.
